Turf Ultimate Rules
SPIRIT POINTS: An integral part of all the sports that the Ottawa Sport & Social Club offers. It is based on the primary focus of the OSSC, which is sportsmanship and to have FUN...NOT on competitive and aggressive sport.
The OSSC plays by official UPA rules with some exceptions:
1.) The OSSC plays 5 on 5 (see below).
2.) There is a hard time cap.(see below).
3.) Field size differs (see below).
4.) Foot blocks are not permitted and are considered fouls.
5.) Stall counts differ (see below)
6.) Zone defense is permitted.
7.) You may NOT score from your own side of half. In the event that a pass is completed by the offensive team in the endzone - no point is scored, and the disc turns over at the endzone front line (updated December 10, 2004).
8.) When lining up to make or receive the pull, do so on the back line of the endzone If the disc hits the ceiling and/or out of bounds area on the pull, the disc is put back into play at the closest point on the playing field proper (no brick rule, but you may call "middle").
9.) If the disc hits the ceiling or and out of bounds area during regular play, it is a turnover.
10.) The disc may travel out of bounds and return in bounds and still be played, as long as it has not contacted anything in the out of bounds areas.
11.) Pulls that are sliding or rolling along the ground may be stopped by a member of the receiving team with their feet. There should be no attempt made to advance/deflect the disc to gain ground when doing this. The person who stops the disc rolling/sliding does not have to put the disc into play!!
ANY ROUGH OR PHYSICAL PLAY WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE EXPULSION FROM FURTHER LEAGUE PLAY AND MAY RESULT IN LIFETIME LEAGUE EXPULSION.

Number of Players: 5 players per team are permitted on the field - with a minimum of two of each gender. A team can play with a minimum of 4 people, as long as there are two of each gender. Captains may agree to waive the rules regarding minimum players but this should be decided before the game starts. IF IT IS AGREED THAT THE GAME COUNTS, IT COUNTS!
Game Length: Games are 55 minutes in length. One person should be designated as the timekeeper. This person should announce when time has expired, at which point the game is over - regardless of where the disc is. In other words, you do not finish the current point - the game ends when the time has expired. Teams are permitted one 60 second time out per game.
Playoff Tie Breaking: A game can end in a tie during the regular season. In the playoffs, the games are 50 minutes. When regulation time has expired, the current point should be played out until a team scores. If this point results in the score being tied, one more point is to be played in order to break the tie. Field Set-Up: 5-on-5 field size is approximately 24 paces wide with 2 paces between fields. OSSC's field length is the entire width of the Coliseum field. The endzones are 8 paces deep. (updated December 10, 2004)
Stall Counts: When defending the thrower, the defensive player will count 7 stalls (as opposed to the traditional 10 stalls).
Zone Defense: Zone defense is permitted, though man-to-man defense is most common with our 5:5 ultimate.
It is our hope that more experienced teams will assist in the promotion and clarification of the spirit of the game and the rules. If a team or person in unclear on something, explain it to them to enhance the Ultimate experience and not to put them at a disadvantage. This will ensure that all games that are played are heading to a higher and more enjoyable level.
Ultimate in 10 Simple Rules
- The Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A 5-on-5 regulation field is 55-60 yards by 35 yards, with endzones 10 yards deep.
- Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation OSSC game has 5 players per team.
- Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
- Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
- Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
- Substitutions -- Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
- Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
- Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
- Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
- Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play
